Housing - Apply for Residence Hall Housing

A few weeks after you have been accepted to Michigan Tech, if you are a domestic student, you will receive an Action Packet from Admissions that contains your Residence Hall Application and Contract. If you are an international student, you will recieve a Welcome Booklet from the International Programs and Services office that contains your Residence Hall application and contract.

You can also find these forms at the online forms page.

Room Assignments

In making room assignments, we consider your housing preferences; but choices of a specific hall, room type, room number, and living options cannot be guaranteed due to space limitations. However if you submit your forms early, you’ll enjoy priority assignment because assignments are determined by the date we receive your completed residence hall application and contract.

Once we have received your completed residence hall application and contract, an acknowledgement email will be sent to your HuskyMail.

Assignment Letter

You will be notified by Housing & Residential Life of your room assignment in the fall by late July and for spring and summer semesters by no later than two weeks prior to the first day of class. If you submit your housing materials after these dates you will receive your residence hall assignment when you arrive on campus.

The following information will be enclosed with your assignment letter: room assignment; room telephone number; name(s) of roommate(s), home telephone number(s), and email; University address; check-in time, date and location; first day of occupancy; and room-and-board rate. Please note that spring semester is one week shorter than fall semester, so your spring semester room and board cost will be slightly less than your fall semester rate. See www.housing.mtu.edu/housing/rates.html for additional room and board rate information and www.admin.mtu.edu/acct for payment information.

Converted Rooms

Please note that the number of students living in University Housing sometimes exceeds the number of regular spaces available. When this is the case, regular rooms are converted to accommodate one extra person. Be assured that we move rooms to regular occupancy as soon as possible. All residents in converted rooms have been given a reduced room rate and will have a complete set of their own loftable and movable furniture. Occupancy numbers tend to decrease as we move toward residence hall opening and through the academic year. This means you or one of your roommates will have the opportunity to move to another room as space becomes available. Your room has been assigned a priority number based on the earliest completion date of housing contracts for all occupants of the room. This priority number is used to identify the order in which we move rooms to regular occupancy. Once your room is in regular occupancy status, your room rate will be changed to reflect the regular room rate for the remainder of the semester.

Room Change Requests

Prior to the University making room assignments, you may contact Housing and Residential Life at 906-487-2682 or housing@mtu.edu to change your preference for hall, roommate, or meal plan. All requests must be made by June 1 for fall semester, December 1 for spring semester assignments, and April 1 for summer session assignments. We will make every attempt to honor requests. However, if we are unable to do so, the room change process begins the second week of classes. Once room assignments are made, no changes can be made until the room change process begins, after you arrive at Tech.
