An interest in an on-campus residence hall began to be expressed as early as 1921,when several issues of the Michigan College of Mines (MCM) Lode devoted space to discussions about building such a facility. Students in favor of a residence hall argued that on-campus housing would create rooms closer to classes and would provide accommodations for an expanding enrollment. Students who preferred off-campus housing said that it was important to have a real home to go to at the day's end. These students said there was plenty of housing available in the community and any student wishing to have a social life could live at one of the three large fraternities. The discussions continued, off and on, over the next 16 years. By 1937, students' complaints about inadequate housing in the community, and administrators' concerns over the housing needs of a growing college, prompted action.
