Live Broadcast Today
Monday, April 21 2008 - Jacob Emerick - Tags: governmental meeting, live broadcast
In an effort to better display what IRHC does to the general residential body, we have decided to start live broadcasting our governmental meetings. The first broadcast was held on 4/14 and featured the turnover of the e-board. This meeting, 4/21, will have several important policy discussions including a five-year plan, posting policy creation, and a calendar of events for fall 2008. The broadcast occurs on Channel 14 as well as online via VLC player (under MTU Live), and we will record it as well in hopes of creating a video podcast on our site for future downloads.
Spring Frisbockey Winners
Monday, April 21 2008 - Jacob Emerick - Tags: frisbockey
After moving Spring Frisbockey up to the SDC Softball fields to Oozeball, the afternoon of 4/19 was filled with Frisbockey, rain, and mud. The single-elimination tournament saw 16 teams, most of them 'bockey veterans except for the addition of Bruce Lee, a team from FYE. The competition was tough and there were more than a few surprising results. The champions since fall 2006, named Slight Setback this tournament, lost in the semi-Finals to Ninja Penguins. Penguins ended up winning the final game against Powerhouse to claim the title. All in all, it was a great tournament to be at regardless of the weather.
Spring Frisbockey Today
Saturday, April 19 2008 - Jacob Emerick - Tags: frisbockey
**Please note, due to Oozeball and snow, this year's tournament will be held at the SDC Softball Fields.**
Spring Frisbockey is in its second year, but it is a beloved event that many diehard 'Bockey fans anticipate during the Spring. Usually held on Walker field, due to Oozeball's reincarnation, the tournament will be held up at the SDC Softball Fields from noon to 6 pm this afternoon, April 19. Sixteen teams, including new FYE teams and old champions, will battle it out in the rain and cold to claim this spring's Frisbockey trophy.
IRHC Solidifies Spring Fling Plans
Thursday, April 17 2008 - Jacob Emerick - Tags: spring fling
Though there was a lot of last minute planning, IRHC managed to put together plans for Spring Fling about 24 hours before the event. IRHC will be giving away Cotton Candy and Condoms at a booth, helping MTSF with Oozeball throughout the day, and dumpster diving for recyclable products with ESC. We're looking forward to working at all of these events during Spring Fling, as we are pretty much covering a pretty wide audience by spreading ourselves out!
Wigs for Kids Change
Tuesday, April 15 2008 - Jacob Emerick - Tags: event
Even though we had over five different hair salons confirmed to help out with our Wigs for Kids event during Spring Fling, most of them have, for one reason or another, pulled their support from the event. Anyone who signed up for this event at the beginning of the year will receive a certificate for a Regis cut that they can redeem at their leisure, and IRHC will be collecting all of the hair and sending a mass package to Wigs for Kids. We apologize for the inconvenience, but hope that this solution works for most people.
Transition Meeting
Monday, April 14 2008 - Jacob Emerick - Tags: viva jake, governmental meeting
This meeting started out in a rather normal fashion, though the attendance was in the dozens of residents. It was the last IRHC meeting with Jacob Emerick, Dan Madrid, and Amy Coffell, all experienced IRHC members, as e-board. After approving the new broomball committee for 2008-09 and hearing numerous reports, the transition began with a thank-you speech from Jacob. Directly after this and a moving speech from Steven O'Dacre, the full room took off their outer shirts to show what they were wearing underneath: red t-shirts with 'Viva Jake'. Overwhelmed by this measure of thoughtfulness and a honorary gavel, Jacob was stricken speechless. Several smaller speeches were given afterwards and Faith Lambert, the new president, adjourned the meeting and welcomed the room to a feast of Little Caesars, ice cream, and cake. Overall, it was a great final meeting for several dedicated members, and we hope to have pictures and the video online soon.
EMU MORHA Results
Sunday, April 13 2008 - Jacob Emerick - Tags: morha
The April business meeting for MORHA was held in Ypsilanti at the Eastern Michigan University. Driving for over 18 hours (round trip), Michigan Tech sent a delegation of 4 residents, 3 of them first years, for about 20 hours of hardcore MORHA business and connections. Some of the results of this meeting included...
Winning the September Business Meeting Bid
The September business meeting for MORHA will be held from Sept 19-21 at Michigan Tech. Over 10 different schools will send delegates to the UP to experience Michigan Tech culture and hold MORHA business.
Winning a Most Valuable Family Member Award
Deryk Reque, the new WHSA president, attended this meeting and made an impact, winning an award for his participation with family activities.
Creating New Connections
Every MTU person who attended came back with several e-mails, phone numbers, and names of different MORHA members and have already started to share constitutions, ideas, and programs.
Past Events Information Online
Wednesday, April 9 2008 - Jacob Emerick - Tags: website
Though it took some tough love and a good amount of foul language, the past events information is now available for viewing in several different ways, similar in presentation to the news page. You can view past events by date, name, location, or tag. We plan on reviewing and enhancing the tagging process over the next few days, and have already seen considerable improvement.
Also, a new feature we hope to add is the ability to add a 'results' portion to each event. This way we'll be able to give an aftermath of each event: who won, how many people were there, etc. By doing this, anyone will be able to see how successful or bad each event was, and by comparing this to our budget, the quality of IRHC event expenditures.
Art Show Voting
Monday, April 7 2008 - Jacob Emerick - Tags: art show, website, voting
After all of the art was submitted last Saturday, some of the web developers got together and decided to make a website with online voting. Based on feedback received by our last project, the egg decorating voting, we changed up the format of the vote to allow each user only a single vote, though one can go back and change their vote at a later date. Also, artists go in and see how their art is doing, but all total stats will be held private until voting closes on Thursday at 9am.
Based on the bad representation of some of the art on a computer screen, we do recommend that you actually view the art show in person before voting online. The link is housing.mtu.edu/irhc/art.
More Website Updates
Friday, April 4 2008 - Jacob Emerick - Tags: photos, website
There have been extensive changes to the tagging interface on the news page and images page, and these changes will soon be recreated on the events page as well. These changes allow users to quickly and easily browse through existing and past content, hopefully increasing the usefulness of the site and allowing a vast amount of scalability. If you have any suggestions on other ways we can increase the usability of the site, feel free to let us know!
Also, we put up a lot more image galleries up. You can view pictures of a number of IRHC events, mostly from the fall of 2005 to present, though we do have some photos from ancient times as well. As all of these pictures were taken during IRHC events by IRHC members, we ask that you shoot us an e-mail at irhc@mtu.edu before you use any of these photos. If you ask nicely, we might even send you a hi-res version.
E-Board for 2008-2009 Elected
Tuesday, April 1 2008 - Jacob Emerick - Tags: governmental meeting, elections
With a strong turnover occurring at the end of this year, IRHC elections saw an unprecedented amount of discussion and debate at the last governmental meeting. However, even though it took over 2 hours to decide, the next year's e-board has been elected and will be transitioned in over the next few weeks.
President - Faith Lambert
Vice President - Angie Curtis
Secretary - Steven O'Dacre
Treasurer - Steele Lindbloom
Major Broomball Commitee Restructure Approved
Wednesday, March 26 2008 - Jacob Emerick - Tags: broomball, governmental meeting
After a professional presentation from Dustin Sommer, the Broomball Chair for 2008-09, and a heated debate by the council, IRHC approved several large changes to the Broomball committee for the upcoming year.
Based on the increase in size and responsibilities of the Broomball traditions, IRHC raised the payment of each committee position. However, since the committee is actually shrinking in size, the overall increase in committee payment is relatively small. With the restructure of the committee, this payment increase is directly in line with the amount of responsibility each member has in their contract.
The restructure of the committee means that Broomball will now be hiring positions based primarily on skill. In the past, IRHC made it a point to get residential representation on the committee through league heads. After reviewing the pros and cons of this setup, and upon recommendation of the Broomball Chair, the committee will now be focused on their duties first. IRHC will still approve each position and may put stipulation on the residency of the different positions, but the contracts and positions will only be focused on their duties.
These changes are merely reflections on the future direction of the Broomball tradition. IRHC Broomball has grown a lot over the last ten years from it's humble beginnings, and we hope that the committee will be able to continue its great traditions for generations of Tech students for years to come.
Winner of Egg Decorating Contest Chosen
Wednesday, March 26 2008 - Jacob Emerick - Tags: egg decorating
With a simple hot-or-not voting setup that allowed multiple votes, a winner of the egg decorating competition has been decided. Holly Walters, last year's winner from DHH, has won the competition with an incredible 1061 to 12 voting turnout. Full prizes and stats will be released to all of the entries later this week.
This voting system was a test for future IRHC events, and it came with both pros and cons. While the site allowed multiple votes, the eggs that it displayed were randomized but skewed to eggs with fewer votes. This allowed a pretty good distribution for voting turnout, though a few problems arose and will be fixed for the next voting site. The primary benefit was the length and amount of voting, as last year's votes were only during Saturday brunch and we collected less than 100 votes total. This year, with 30,700 votes total, we saw increased turnout, participation, and server overload. If there is any suggestions for future voting sites, please let us know at irhc@mtu.edu. Thank you to everyone who voted for eggs this year!
Egg Decorating Website Problems
Monday, March 24 2008 - Jacob Emerick - Tags: egg decorating, website
Without access to a reliable database, we had to use a backwards method for tallying votes. With a high number of votes, this method results in a server lagging. Over the next few hours (now that we have access again), we hope to optimize some of the background code to allow faster voting and site viewing.
Egg Website Launched (with voting!)
Friday, March 21 2008 - Jacob Emerick - Tags: egg decorating, website, event
Just in time for the egg decorating competition on Friday, March 21, the voting website was launched to let anyone, even people who didn't make an egg, vote on the bestest eggs. The website is somewhat of a test, as eggs in particular are usually round and decorated on multiple angles, which makes a 2-D picture difficult to judge the creativity and art put into the pieces. However, we hope that this allows more people to vote on the eggs and gives our volunteer staff an easier task for future years. As always, feedback is more then welcome.
Photo Gallery Online
Thursday, March 20 2008 - Jacob Emerick - Tags: photos, website
As part of IRHC's attempt to better advertise it's events and show interested parties examples of the type of things we do (like, the department that gives us funding), we usually take pictures of different events that we put on. This includes everything from Frisbockey to K-Day, and after several years, we've collected quite a few photos. We've put up a selection of some of these pictures on the images page for all to view, and we'll continue updating this page as more events happen and we get around to it. If you'd like a hi-res of a photo or want to use any of these images, please let us know at irhc@mtu.edu first as a courtesy.
E-Board Nominations Open
Monday, March 17 2008 - Jacob Emerick - Tags: governmental meeting, elections
A four-week process all together, IRHC e-board elections involve information sessions, a two-week nomination period, and then two weeks of transition before the new leaders take charge and the old ones step down. There are already five students nominated for positions...
President nominees - Jacob Emerick, Kyle Done
Vice President nominee - Zack Wheeler
Secretary nominee - Steven O'Dacre
Treasurer nominee - Steele Lindbloom
Nominations will remain open until elections occur on March 31. You can nominate individuals by sending an email to irhc@mtu.edu.
Art Show Rules Available
Wednesday, March 5 2008 - Jacob Emerick - Tags: art show
The full IRHC art show rules are now available online at the art show website at housing.mtu.edu/irhc/art. The rules include full descriptions of the seven different categories as well as basic restrictions of size and 'PC' content.
The seven categories for this year's show include standards like painting, poetry, photography, sculpture, and mixed media as well as the new digital art and cinematography. While the five standards are easily displayed during the traveling portion of the show, the other two must be submitted electronically and will be displayed online for viewing. No worries, the judges will also view them online.
Broomball Chair for 2008-09 Approved
Tuesday, March 4 2008 - Jacob Emerick - Tags: broomball, governmental meeting
The process to pick a Broomball Chair and Vice Chair for IRHC is a careful one. First, applications go out via email and online sites for interested individuals. This year the applications were available for three weeks to allow ample time for quality applications and applicants. Then, each candidate is interviewed by a selection panel that includes the IRHC President, Vice President, advisor, as well as the Broomball advisor. This process usually takes over a half hour per candidate, as they are asked a variety of questions regarding their plans and visions of Broomball as well as any personal information regarding their abilities for the position. After this process, the IRHC governmental body votes on the recommendation put forth by the selection panel.
This year there was only one pair of applications, which happened to be the current Broomball Chair and Vice Chair already (Dustin Sommer and Nick Deming). However, the selection committee and IRHC governmental body still went through the process and seriously contemplated reopening applications to allow others to aim at this position. With the selection committee and the approval vote unanimous (not counting abstains) for the pair, IRHC has few doubts of the capabilities of their selection. We all look forward to a new year of IRHC Broomball!
Art Show Website Online
Friday, February 29 2008 - Jacob Emerick - Tags: art show, website
The second annual awesome IRHC art show will be held in early April, and publicity and a website have been launched. While some areas of the site will be updated over the next few weeks (like, the 2008 rules and photos), there's a bunch of information online already about the history of the show, how it's run, and even pictures from last year's amazing creations. There's going to be several cool additions this year that will be included in upcoming announcements, so keep your eyes peeled!
To view the new site, visit housing.mtu.edu/irhc/art.

Dodgeball Updates
Wednesday, February 27 2008 - Jacob Emerick - Tags: dodgeball tournament
Roughly half of the games are already done for Dodgeball, and so you can already see what teams are aiming at making it to finals. Also, due to some issues with Broomball schedule changes, our tournament schedule has been shifted around. To see more information, you can check out the dodgeball site at housing.mtu.edu/irhc/dodgeball.
News Page Updated
Monday, February 25 2008 - Jacob Emerick - Tags: website
IRHC never really had a good method of handling past news posts. In previous websites, the past posts were deleted, thrown aside, and trampled on in favor of the 'most recent posts'. This obviously creates a giant hole of missing information. While some web programmers could make a tagged xml database with hands behind their backs, this took the webmaster some time, mostly because he's a bit thick in the head.
Anyways, you can now view different posts based on category, author, and date. We will be looking at different options, including some simple pagination and search options, but if you have any ideas, let us know at irhc@mtu.edu.
Dodgeball Schedule Online
Monday, February 25 2008 - Jacob Emerick - Tags: dodgeball tournament, event

Cocoa Shack Schedule for Finals
Friday, February 22 2008 - Jacob Emerick - Tags: broomball, cocoa shack, event
As the broomball season winds down and final games are played, IRHC decided to follow suit with the cocoa shack. It's been a great year for the shack, with well over 2500 cups given away over the season, so we've decided to keep it open during the major final games of Broomball. While it will be closed over this weekend, the shack will remain open this week from Monday through Thursday with varying times. You can view our event schedule to see exact times, but for the most part, if there's a final game being played then the shack will be open. Oh yeah, and it's still free.

Not only is it available on our homepage and under the 'events' tag, but you can view it in RSS 1.0, RSS 2.0, and Atom 1.0 formats. More formats will be available in the future, including iCal and vCal, and one day we might actually release a dynamic pdf calendar too.
IRHC Donates $1,600 for Three Groups
Tuesday, February 19 2008 - Jacob Emerick - Tags: governmental meeting, budget
After three separate presentations, the Inter-Residence Hall Council approved a total of $1,600 to three different groups at the February 18 governmental meeting.
The first donation was to the InterVarsity Christian Fellowship in support of their Broken Bread program, which will be held in the DHH Dining Hall on February 28. More information about Michigan Tech's IVCF can be found at ivcf.students.mtu.edu.
The second donation was to the Residence Hall Association of Northern Illinois University as a show of support in the face of their recent tragedy. Information about the happenings at NIU can be found niu.edu.
Finally, after a professional presentation from Dustin Sommer about his Prince's Point Project, IRHC approved $1,000 to be spent on needed equipment for the development of this area and voiced a lot of support for the residential interest in his work. Some information about his project can be found on the USG website.
For more detailed information about the IRHC donation process, funding requests, or these presentations, feel free to email us at irhc@mtu.edu.
Dodgeball Registration and Rules Online
Wednesday, February 13 2008 - Jacob Emerick - Tags: event, dodgeball tournament
After a bunch of discussion regarding on- and off-campus students participating in our Dodgeball Tournament, the Inter-Residence Hall Council leadership has decided to allow off-campus residents to participate without paying special fees as long as they are on a team with at least six on-campus residents. The Danielle Heights Apartments, by the way, is off-campus for all we care. More information about the tournament can be found by visiting the site at housing.mtu.edu/irhc/dodgeball, and if you have any specific questions you can contact us at irhc@mtu.edu. Hope to see you at the tourney!
Flower Fundraiser raises over Five Hundred
Tuesday, February 12 2008 - Jacob Emerick - Tags: event, fundraiser
Once an annual event, the Inter-Residence Hall Council has not held the Flower Fundraiser since the spring of 2005. While it was profitable and enjoyed by the residents, approximately five sales were made during that year, and IRHC quickly decided to drop the event. However, members wanted to bring it back as part of a general service events push and saw surprising success. Over 198 total sales were made, raising $555 dollars for the Barbara-Kettle Gundlach Shelter in Chassell. These sales included anything from two dozen roses to a lucky individual to many single carnations being sent to dear friends. All together, 211 roses and 127 carnations will be sent out on Thursday, February 14 (Valentine's Day), so keep your eye out to see if you received one!
New RSS Format Available
Tuesday, February 12 2008 - Jacob Emerick - Tags: website, rss
After several frustrating technical hurdles and at least one 'No Duh!' moment, RSS 1.0 has been added to the feed format options. For the layman, RSS is a way that you can easily view updates to this website without actually visiting it. Our feeds allow you to be updated whenever a new 'news item' is posted. RSS 2.0 and Atom 1.0 has been available for this time, but we had a hard time scripting for RSS 1.0. This format is seen as more strict and RDF-ish for some users, but most can use whichever feed they prefer. For more information and available feeds, you can simply scroll up to the top of this page.

Website Update
Wednesday, January 30 2008 - Jacob Emerick - Tags: website
Over the next week (or longer), the IRHC website will be undergoing several updates. The reason for the lengthy updates involve limitations of the web developer and his current tools. For now, if you wish to visit the old website, it can be found at housing.mtu.edu/irhc/old. However, the old website will soon be completely removed when the new one is finished.

A number of student issues were brought up during the last governmental IRHC meeting, and now page-long descriptions of the main issues can be found under the 'projects' link. If you are interested in helping out with any of these issues (plastic and cardboard recycling, smoking entrance policies, online rideboard, and grassy area on campus), please send an email to irhc@mtu.edu with your name and which issue you're interested in. Anyone in the residence halls is invited to join a committee, regardless of their affiliation in the hall council organizations.

Frisbockey: Week One
Saturday, September 15 2007 - Jacob Emerick - Tags: event, frisbockey
The first week of Frisbockey has finally drawn to a chilly, wet close. Though some teams have dominated over the competition, it's hard to say what teams will make it all the way to finals. Also, with an average temperature in the low 50s for the first week and higher (70s) temperatures heading into second week, there's no telling what the future team stats will look like. For photos or to view team stats for this season, check out the events page.
Frisbockey Not Cancelled
Tuesday, September 11 2007 - Jacob Emerick - Tags: event, frisbockey

The schedule can be found on the events page, and we'll be uploading pictures as soon as the season starts.
K Day Recap
Friday, September 7 2007 - Jacob Emerick - Tags: kday, event, cotton candy
Even though K-Day was held in the SDC due to inclement weather, many students and groups headed up to the SDC to celebrate this Michigan Tech tradition. There were plenty of activities to enjoy, including inflatables, WMTU root beer, and dozens of booths with varying activities. IRHC alone gave away over 500 cotton candy cones and 400 condoms, as well as dozens of brochures. Even though K-Day inside is a fraction of the normal event, Tech students still managed to have fun in our gym! Be sure to check out the pictures on the Event Photos page.

Grow Something a Success
Monday, September 3 2007 - Jacob Emerick - Tags: orientation week, event
A new event this year, 'Grow Something' has turned out to be a huge success. Originally planned to last four hours, we gave away 250 free plants in under 20 minutes! For the residents who did not receive a plant this time, we are hoping to order up to four times as much for next year's event to be ready for this unexpected demand. Check out photos on the events page of the giveaway.

Though the winners won't be announced until a future hall council meeting, feel free to check out images of the event and check back here in a week or so to find out the winners of Schoolyard Olympics.

Schoolyard Olympics Update
Tuesday, August 28 2007 - Jacob Emerick - Tags: orientation week, schoolyard olympics, event
The whiffle ball tournament during Schoolyard Olympics has been completely canceled. There was a few reasons for it, but to make a long story short, it's been replaced by the home run derby. We hope this replacement is even more fun then last year's whiffle ball tournament and look forward to having another great event for the residents to enjoy.

Over the last few days, about 1500 students have moved into the three residence halls. Monday marks the beginning of Orientation, a week long experience that all new students go through before classes. All of us from IRHC wish these students the best of luck as they start their life as Huskies.
Website Finished
Monday, August 20 2007 - Jacob Emerick - Tags: website
Our website is 'finished'! There are no more *under construction* pages left, and any blank areas are merely waiting for the school year to start so we can start putting up more IRHC information. However, as we have events right away during Orientation Week, be sure to keep your eyes open for updates as new events come up and old events get photos.

Over the last few days our site has been once again updated. The history page now has records and information about the past of IRHC, including fantastic low-resolution pictures of IRHC events and members. The largest change is internal, as usual. With the update of gd by Aux Tech we now can upload, resize, and thumbnail images in our event gallery. Be sure to check back after a few events to see some cool pictures.
Homepage Slideshow
Wednesday, August 8 2007 - Jacob Emerick - Tags: website
Almost 100 images have been added to the slideshow on the homepage today! While this looks totally awesome, the speed of loading different parts of the page are now severely impacted. We'll try to optimize it so the rest of the page isn't slower while maintaining the variety and quality of pictures on the show. Hope you enjoy them!
Update: The slideshow has been shortened but fixed. Also, it is now easier for IRHC members to choose what pictures appear on the slideshow, so there is still a variety of images to view.

The Inter-Residence Hall Council has a new desk! That's right, with the recent renovations up at Danielle Heights Apartments, our organization received a nice large corner desk straight from the 1970s. This new furniture is the largest improvement our office has received since we first obtained it several years ago.
